Isle of Man Open Data

The Isle of Man's Open Data Platform

30+ structured, machine-readable datasets covering the Isle of Man economy, environment, infrastructure, and society. Every dataset is available through a REST API, AI-powered MCP tools, bulk downloads, and interactive dashboards — all free, no API key required.

Built by Manx Technology Group as part of the Smart Island observatory. We scrape, parse, and structure data from government PDFs, CSV exports, web APIs, and scanned documents — then enrich it with AI analysis and make it available in a standard, programmatic format.

Why Isle of Man Open Data Matters

Transparency

Open data holds institutions accountable. When school enrolment trends, crime statistics, and government spending are publicly accessible, citizens can make informed decisions and participate meaningfully in democracy.

Innovation

Structured data enables developers, researchers, and AI tools to build applications that benefit everyone. Property market analysis, employment insights, and environmental monitoring all start with accessible data.

Better Decisions

Whether you're a policy maker planning school capacity, a business choosing where to invest, or a researcher studying demographic change — structured, up-to-date data leads to better outcomes than intuition alone.

The Open Data Challenge on the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man Government publishes data — but it's scattered across dozens of websites, buried in PDF reports, formatted as CSV files with inconsistent schemas, and in some cases only available as scanned images requiring OCR to extract.

Smart Island was built to solve this. We run 65+ automated pipelines that scrape, parse, and structure data from its original sources — whether that's a JSON API, a CSV export, a text-based PDF table, or a scanned document that needs AI-powered OCR extraction. The result is a unified, machine-readable platform where every dataset follows the same access pattern.

This isn't a criticism of government data publishing. The IoM Government has an active open data programme and publishes more than many jurisdictions its size. But government moves at government speed. The private sector can move faster, iterate more aggressively, and build the tooling that makes raw data genuinely useful — APIs, AI enrichment, cross-dataset analysis, and real-time dashboards.

How to Access Isle of Man Open Data

Available Datasets

Every dataset below is available as structured JSON via API, MCP tools, and bulk downloads.

From PDFs to APIs: How We Process Data

1

Collect

Scrape government websites, download PDF reports, pull CSV exports, and query web APIs.

2

Parse

Extract tables from text PDFs (PyMuPDF), run OCR on scanned documents, normalise CSV schemas.

3

Enrich

AI analysis adds context — automation risk, skills extraction, sentiment scoring, trend commentary.

4

Publish

Structured JSON via REST API, 89+ MCP tools for AI agents, bulk downloads, and interactive dashboards.

Licensing & Attribution

Government-sourced datasets are published under the IoM Open Government Licence. Community data from OpenStreetMap uses the Open Database License (ODbL). World Bank and OECD data is available under CC BY 4.0. AI enrichments (risk scores, skills extraction, narratives) are original Smart Island analysis.

All data is free for personal, research, and commercial use with attribution. See individual dataset pages for specific licensing details.
