Our Mission

Artificial intelligence is transforming the global economy at an unprecedented pace. Every industry, every occupation, and every worker on the Isle of Man will be affected in some way - whether through new opportunities, changing skill requirements, or evolving job roles.

Smart Island exists to make this transformation visible, understandable, and actionable. We believe that when people have access to clear, data-driven insights about how AI is reshaping their labour market, they can make better decisions - whether they are a job seeker exploring career paths, an employer planning their workforce, or a policymaker shaping the island's economic future.

The Isle of Man has historically lacked open, machine-readable data about its labour market. Smart Island addresses this directly by not only generating intelligence from AI, but also making that data available through open APIs and MCP (Model Context Protocol) interfaces - so AI assistants, researchers, and developers can query Isle of Man job market data programmatically.

We do not believe AI is something to fear. It has massive potential to augment human capabilities, create new roles, and drive productivity across the Isle of Man economy. But realising that potential requires awareness, preparation, and the right skills. That is what this platform is for: to educate the community on what is changing, inform decisions with real data, and advise on practical steps to adapt and thrive.

Manx Technology Group

Built by Manx Technology Group

Isle of Man

Smart Island is developed and maintained by Manx Technology Group (MTG), an Isle of Man-based managed service provider and technology company specialising in AI, IoT, cloud infrastructure, and digital transformation. We help businesses and organisations across the island adopt and integrate emerging technologies into their operations.

Smart Island is one example of how we apply our expertise: combining custom AI workflow systems with the latest large language models to turn raw data into actionable intelligence - and making it accessible through APIs and MCP interfaces so the community and its AI tools can use it.

What Smart Island Does

Every day, Smart Island scrapes live job vacancies from the Isle of Man Job Centre and enriches each one with AI-powered occupational intelligence. The result is a comprehensive, real-time picture of the IOM labour market that goes far beyond a simple job listing.

AI Risk Scoring

Every vacancy is scored 0-100% for automation risk and AI occupational exposure, showing which roles face disruption and which will be augmented.

Skills Intelligence

AI extracts skills from each job description and maps them to a canonical registry, revealing the most in-demand capabilities across the island.

Task Analysis

Each role's core tasks are classified as routine (automatable), augmented (AI-assisted), or human-only, with AI solution suggestions.

Career Paths

AI-generated career progression paths with skills gap analysis, helping workers plan transitions between occupations.

Weekly Intelligence

Auto-generated weekly market briefings based on live labour market signals - covering sentiment, risk trends, skills demand, and strategic advice for job seekers, employers, and policymakers.

MCP Integration

A 34-tool MCP server lets AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT query IOM job market data directly in conversation.

How It's Built

Smart Island runs on custom workflow systems built by MTG that use the latest AI models to scrape, classify, enrich, and analyse job market data automatically. Our classification pipeline uses a weighted arbitration system that combines multiple AI and academic sources to assign occupational codes with high accuracy - and when sources disagree, a tiebreaker AI call resolves the ambiguity.

All enriched data is exposed through REST APIs and a 34-tool MCP server, making the Isle of Man's labour market queryable by AI assistants, researchers, and third-party applications - helping address the island's historic lack of open, machine-readable workforce data.

Advisory content - weekly market briefings, career guidance, employer strategies, and economics commentary - is automatically generated by AI based on real-time labour market signals: vacancy volumes, risk trend shifts, emerging skill demand, and sector movements. No human analyst writes these reports; they are produced fresh each week from the data.

We also used AI extensively to develop the platform itself. The entire Smart Island codebase was built with the help of OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Anthropic Claude - naturally. We believe in practising what we preach: AI is a powerful tool for building things faster and better, and this project is proof of that.

Important Caveats

We believe in transparency. Here's what you should know about the limitations of this data.

Data-driven intelligence with AI enrichment

Smart Island intelligence is built on structured data, established research, and international taxonomies — including UK SOC2020, O*NET, the Anthropic Economic Index, the FRS AI Occupational Exposure dataset, and ONS ASHE salary benchmarks. AI models (via Azure AI Foundry) are used to enrich, classify, and analyse this data — not to fabricate it. However, AI outputs may contain inaccuracies or reflect biases in training data.

Advisory content is auto-generated

Weekly market briefings, career advisor reports, employer guidance, economics commentary, and sector analysis are automatically generated by AI based on real-time labour market signals — vacancy volumes, risk trends, skill demand shifts, and sector movements. They are not written or reviewed by human analysts, but are grounded in structured data from the platform's enrichment pipeline.

Automation risk is indicative, not predictive

Risk scores (0-100%) represent exposure to AI disruption based on occupational task profiles. They do not predict job losses. Many roles scored as "high risk" will be augmented rather than replaced. Context, regulation, and adoption timelines all matter.

Occupational classification is approximate

SOC2020 codes are assigned through a custom weighted arbitration of AI and CASCOT recommendations. While this produces strong results in most cases, some niche or multi-disciplinary roles may be classified imprecisely.

Salary data has limitations

Many IoM employers advertise "salary to be advised" or provide only hourly rates. UK salary benchmarks (ONS ASHE) are used for comparison but may not perfectly reflect Isle of Man pay scales.

Not professional advice

This platform provides data-driven insights for educational purposes. It is not a substitute for professional career guidance, employment law advice, or financial planning. Always consult qualified professionals for personal decisions.

Data currency

Job listings are scraped daily from the IOM Job Centre. AI exposure datasets (Anthropic, FRS, JSA) are updated when new releases are published by their respective providers. Census data reflects the 2021 IoM Census.

Open data and web scraping

Some Isle of Man Government websites block AI crawlers (e.g. GPTBot). Smart Island uses conventional web scrapers to collate publicly available data from these sources before passing it to AI models for enrichment and analysis. All data is sourced from public job listings and open government publications. No private or restricted data is accessed.
