Automation Risk
This role has a moderate automation risk due to the use of AI and automation tools for monitoring, configuration, and routine network tasks. However, many responsibilities—such as complex troubleshooting, vendor management, and the introduction of new technologies—require human expertise and judgment. GenAI and automation tools can augment most technical tasks, but cannot fully replace the need for experienced network engineers.
Task analysis
- Operate and maintain the mobile packet core network supporting data services across 2G, 4G, and 5G.
- Monitor network performance and investigate faults affecting mobile data connectivity.
- Carry out configuration changes, system upgrades, and maintenance of core network platforms.
- Support roaming connectivity and interconnect partners.
- Assist with network expansion, capacity planning, and infrastructure improvements.
- Support the introduction of new services, platforms, and technologies.
- Work with vendors and internal teams to resolve complex technical issues.
- Participate in preventative maintenance and architecture reviews.
- Assist with security monitoring and incident response within the mobile core environment.
- Participate in an on-call rota supporting the operational network.
