Job Description
Automation Risk
While some routine documentation and monitoring tasks are increasingly automated via EHRs and AI tools, the core functions of chemotherapy nursing—administering treatments, assessing patients, and providing compassionate support—require hands-on expertise and real-world judgment. AI can augment monitoring and compliance, but most tasks resist full automation due to their physical, empathetic, and clinical nature.
Task analysis
- Administer systemic anti-cancer therapies and supportive treatments to patients in the oncology unit.
- Assess patient health status and monitor for adverse reactions during and after chemotherapy infusion.
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records of patient treatments, reactions, and progress.
- Coordinate with the multidisciplinary oncology team to develop and update individualized care plans.
- Provide compassionate support and education to patients and families regarding chemotherapy, side effects, and coping strategies.
- Participate in nurse-led services such as PICC line placement and Macmillan Acute Oncology service.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety protocols and regulatory standards in chemotherapy administration.
- Train and mentor junior nursing staff in chemotherapy techniques and patient care.
- Document and report symptoms or changes in patient conditions to senior staff and physicians.
