While some routine documentation and monitoring tasks are increasingly automated via EHRs and AI tools, the core functions of chemotherapy nursing—administering treatments, assessing patients, and providing compassionate support—require hands-on expertise and real-world judgment. AI can augment monitoring and compliance, but most tasks resist full automation due to their physical, empathetic, and clinical nature.

Task analysis

  • Administer systemic anti-cancer therapies and supportive treatments to patients in the oncology unit.
  • Assess patient health status and monitor for adverse reactions during and after chemotherapy infusion.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records of patient treatments, reactions, and progress.
  • Coordinate with the multidisciplinary oncology team to develop and update individualized care plans.
  • Provide compassionate support and education to patients and families regarding chemotherapy, side effects, and coping strategies.
  • Participate in nurse-led services such as PICC line placement and Macmillan Acute Oncology service.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety protocols and regulatory standards in chemotherapy administration.
  • Train and mentor junior nursing staff in chemotherapy techniques and patient care.
  • Document and report symptoms or changes in patient conditions to senior staff and physicians.
