Automation Risk

While some documentation and monitoring tasks are increasingly automated or AI-augmented, the majority of nursing duties—such as patient assessment, care planning, education, and emergency response—require empathy, clinical judgment, and physical presence. GenAI tools can assist with record-keeping and information retrieval, but direct patient care and multidisciplinary collaboration remain resistant to full automation.

Task analysis

  • Assess and monitor trauma and orthopaedic patients, including vital signs and wound status.
  • Administer medications and monitor for adverse reactions.
  • Develop, implement, and adapt individualized care plans for trauma and elective orthopaedic patients.
  • Document patient care, observations, and interventions in electronic health records.
  • Educate patients and families about post-operative care, rehabilitation, and health maintenance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care and discharge planning.
  • Support and supervise junior staff and healthcare assistants on the ward.
  • Respond to urgent situations and major trauma cases, including during peak periods like TT fortnight.
