Why Are IoM Prices Higher?
Isle of Man broadband is significantly more expensive than the UK mainland. At the 500 Mbps tier, IoM consumers pay roughly double what UK customers pay for equivalent speeds. Several factors explain this:
- Small market — 85,000 people cannot generate the economies of scale that 67 million UK consumers can. Fixed infrastructure costs are spread across fewer subscribers.
- Subsea connectivity — all international traffic crosses undersea cables to the UK, adding cost and complexity.
- Limited competition — effectively a duopoly (Manx Telecom + Sure) vs the UK's 100+ ISPs. Starlink and Noventre are growing but still marginal.
- Infrastructure investment — the £11.65m government gap funding for FTTP rollout is ultimately recovered through subscriber pricing.
- No Ofcom regulation — CURA regulates the IoM market, but doesn't impose the same wholesale access obligations that drive UK price competition.
The Nordic comparison is instructive: Sweden's Telia offers symmetric 1 Gbps for ~£42/month — less than a quarter of Manx Telecom's price. But Sweden has 10 million people and decades of government-funded fibre infrastructure.
