Most core tasks require direct human interaction, empathy, and physical presence, making them resistant to automation. Routine documentation and scheduling can be augmented or automated with care management software, but the essence of the role remains highly people-focused. AI tools can assist with record-keeping and communication, but cannot substitute for the relationship-based aspects of support work.

Task analysis

  • Support autistic individuals in daily living activities such as meal preparation, cleaning, and personal care.
  • Accompany and encourage individuals to participate in community activities (e.g., swimming, walking groups, cinema trips).
  • Promote health and well-being by supporting individuals to maintain routines and access healthcare.
  • Document daily activities, incidents, and progress in care records.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate support and share updates.
  • Assist with transport (e.g., driving service users to activities or appointments).
  • Adapt support approaches to individual needs and preferences, building on strengths and goals.
  • Promote independence and self-advocacy for service users.
