Automation Risk

Many core machinist tasks, such as machine setup, inspection, and routine maintenance, are increasingly automatable with modern CNC, robotics, and digital inspection technologies, resulting in a high automation risk. However, tasks requiring creative problem-solving, process improvement, and team collaboration remain less susceptible to full automation, and AI tools are expected to augment rather than fully replace these functions.

Task analysis

  • Set up and operate CNC milling or turning machines to produce precision metal parts.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to determine machining operations.
  • Measure and inspect finished parts for accuracy using micrometers and calipers.
  • Program CNC machines using CAM software for new or modified parts.
  • Monitor machine operation and adjust settings to maintain quality and safety.
  • Maintain machine tools, performing routine cleaning and minor repairs.
  • Collaborate with team members to resolve production issues and improve processes.
  • Align and secure fixtures, cutting tools, and materials on machines.
  • Troubleshoot machining problems and make necessary adjustments.
