30 Datasets and Counting
Smart Island now hosts 30 open datasets covering every aspect of Isle of Man life — from government transparency and financial regulation to marine biodiversity and broadband speeds. Here's what went live today.
Freedom of Information Archive
Over 4,000 FOI requests to Isle of Man public authorities, scraped from the gov.im portal and stored in SQL for real-time search. The page features a racing bar chart showing which departments receive the most requests over time, outcome analysis, and searchable tables with links to original response documents. Department of Health and Social Care leads with the most requests.
Interactive Marine Map
An EMODnet-powered Leaflet map showing 31 marine protected areas (including 10+ IoM-specific sites managed by DEFA), 7 Isle of Man lighthouses from the Northern Lighthouse Board, shipwrecks, aggregate extraction zones, and 8 subsea cable routes from the 1859 telegraph to the 2022 CeltixConnect-2.
Financial Intelligence (FIU)
Eight years of Suspicious Activity Reports (2018-2025) from the IoM Financial Intelligence Unit. Quarterly trends, breakdown by suspected criminality type, and outcome analysis — critical data for the island's financial services reputation.
Broadband & Telecoms
CURA quarterly market statistics extracted from regulatory PDFs — broadband subscribers, mobile connections, Starlink's growing market share. Plus Ookla Speedtest data showing IoM median speeds doubled from 82 Mbps to 113 Mbps in two years. A price comparison page benchmarks Manx Telecom, Sure, and Noventre against UK and European providers.
AI Observatory Dashboard
A new landing page at /observatory brings together all the workforce intelligence tools — job market data, automation risk scoring, skills analysis, and the 6 AI advisors — in one place.
Net Zero & Climate
IoM greenhouse gas inventory data (1990-2023) from the Aether/DEFA report, with comparisons to UK and peer jurisdictions via Our World in Data.
