Three New Data Streams in One Day
Today was one of the biggest days yet for Smart Island. Three entirely new data categories went live: real-world broadband speed measurements, telecoms market regulation data, and live IoT sensor feeds from the MTG IoT Network.
Broadband Speed League Table
Using Ookla's open Speedtest data — the same data behind speedtest.net — I'm now querying global parquet files directly from AWS S3 to extract Isle of Man broadband performance. 10 quarters of data (Q3 2023 to Q4 2025) showing the island's median download speed climbing from 82 Mbps to 113 Mbps.
But the real story is the league table. By querying the same Ookla dataset for 24 countries and territories, Smart Island now shows exactly where the Isle of Man sits against Singapore, the Nordics, UK regions, Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, and major European nations.
The Isle of Man's 2018 National Telecoms Strategy aimed for speeds "trending in the top 10% of league tables." Back then, the island ranked 62nd globally at 10.5 Mbps. The data now shows whether that ambition has been met.
CURA Quarterly Market Statistics
The Communications & Utilities Regulatory Authority publishes quarterly PDF reports covering the IoM telecoms market. I'm now automatically downloading these PDFs (12 quarters, Q4 2022 to Q4 2025), extracting text, and parsing key statistics with regex.
The trends are striking: copper lines dropping 27% in a year, FTTP fibre reaching 70% of all broadband connections, Starlink growing from 2% to 3.3%, and Sure overtaking Manx Telecom in leased line market share.
Combined with the government's £11.65 million fibre investment and the ongoing fairness controversy around ducting costs, the telecoms narrative writes itself.
MTG IoT Network (Work in Progress)
The first Smart Farm sensors are live — measuring rainfall and solar radiation (PPFD) via LoRaWAN. The decoder registry auto-detects Milesight UC500/UC501, EM300-TH, and AM307 devices. The /iot page shows devices with signal strength, battery status, and time-series charts.
This is still being built out — sensors are being migrated onto the new platform, and data may be intermittent during commissioning.

Broadband & Utility Price Comparison
Two new comparison pages went live in the afternoon:
Broadband Price Comparison — Manx Telecom, Sure, and Noventre packages side-by-side against BT, Sky, Virgin Media, Starlink (now £35/month for 100 Mbps), and European providers (Ziggo NL, Telia SE). Grouped by speed tier with cost-per-Mbps calculations. The IoM premium at 500 Mbps is roughly 3x the cheapest UK equivalent.
Utility Price Comparison — MUA electricity rates vs British Gas, EDF, Octopus, Scottish Power, and SSE. The interesting finding: while MUA's unit rate is ~19% higher than the UK Ofgem cap, the standing charges are 54% lower. For lower-consumption households, the Isle of Man is actually cheaper overall.
Tabbed Data Menu
With 26+ datasets, the navigation mega menu was getting congested. I replaced the 6-column grid with a tabbed interface — Economy, Utilities, Island Life, Transport, Places & People, Tools. Each tab shows its items in a clean 2-column grid. The active tab auto-selects based on which page you're currently viewing.
What's Next
More IoT sensors across the island, and integration with the weekly AI advisors.
