This role has a high proportion of routine and augmented tasks, such as record-keeping, vehicle checks, and route planning, which are increasingly automated by fleet management and telematics software. However, tasks requiring physical presence, real-world judgment, and direct customer interaction remain less susceptible to full automation. AI tools can assist with logistics and communication, but full driverless automation is not yet widespread.

Task analysis

  • Drive HGV vehicles to deliver goods to customers safely and efficiently.
  • Inspect vehicles and perform basic maintenance checks before and after journeys.
  • Secure cargo and ensure load compliance with safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of driving hours, deliveries, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Communicate with customers and company dispatch to coordinate deliveries.
  • Respond to unexpected situations on the road, such as accidents or route changes.
  • Collect signatures or payments upon delivery as required.
  • Report vehicle defects, accidents, or violations to management.
  • Assist with loading and unloading cargo when necessary.
