While some routine tasks such as record-keeping and head counts are increasingly automated, the core responsibilities of a Prison Officer—such as conflict de-escalation, emergency response, and inmate welfare—require human judgment, empathy, and physical presence. AI and technology can assist with monitoring and documentation, but direct interaction and security duties remain resistant to full automation.

Task analysis

  • Conduct regular head counts and verify inmate presence according to schedule.
  • Monitor inmate behavior and interactions to prevent violence or escape.
  • Search inmates, cells, and vehicles for contraband and prohibited items.
  • Maintain detailed records of incidents, inmate activities, and facility logs.
  • Respond to emergencies and de-escalate conflicts between inmates.
  • Escort inmates within the facility and during external transfers.
  • Screen visitors and deliveries for security risks at facility entrances.
  • Participate in team briefings and communicate with supervisors and colleagues.
  • Support inmate rehabilitation and welfare by identifying needs and referring to appropriate services.
